Breastfed Vs Formula Fed – What’s Really Best for Your Baby?

A newborn baby boy breastfeeding from his mother
My second born, the 'boob boy' - Total opposite to my first born - my 'bottle baby'.

Okay mama, let’s have the chat that every new mum wants to have but without the side order of high-horse and lectures that generally come with it: breastfed vs formula fed — which one’s “better”?

I’ve done both. Twice. With two very different little boys. And here’s the tea. ☕

When my firstborn, Leonardo, came into the world (three weeks early, tiny as a peanut, and with just not enough fat to keep up the marathon that is breastfeeding), things did not go the dreamy “golden hour latch” way the books promised. He would tire out after a few sucks, I was hooked up to the pump more than I was sleeping, and at six weeks in — boom, mastitis. By the eight-week mark, I threw in the towel and went full formula. Guess what? The kid started sleeping 10pm–6am. Bliss.

Fast-forward to baby number two, Massimo. This one was a boob boy. I breastfed him for a full year. He barely touched a bottle except for our late-night “dream feed” top-ups (a cheeky little mix of formula for fullness and boob for comfort that we started at the 4-month mark). By the end, he was latching more for snuggles than sustenance, and I was honestly okay with that.

Here’s the kicker though: I now have a healthy, thriving four-and-a-half-year-old and a bouncy two-year-old who both had totally different starts in life. One got mostly formula, one got mostly breast. Both are fine. More than fine.

So what’s best? Honestly, whatever works for you and your baby. End of story. Your boobs, your body, your choice. People’s opinions? They don’t belong in this conversation. Whether you breastfeed for a day, a year, or not at all — you’re still a freaking amazing mama.

And if anyone tries to tell you otherwise, send them my way. 😉
